Title: Would you like to be tracked? (Semi Offical Announcement)
Post by: ryanteck on February 03, 2012, 12:21:02 PM
Dear members of Innectis

As you may or may not know I own a mine craft server lists called Mc-Serverlist.co.uk

Soon if all goes well the lists will be able to track users, tracking what servers they go on and for how long.

I would like to know weather you agree that this is a good or an bad idea.

You can discuss it here and vote @ http://mc-serverlist.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8.0 (No signup needed)

Even if I do, do it there will be a way for you to Opt-Out from this system

Thanks - Ryan

Sounds suspiciously Orwellian...

Big Brother is watching you. Big Brother is ALWAYS watching you.

In all honesty though, I'd support the idea if it was opt-in rather than opt-out.

Vanilla Minecraft servers return a full lit of online players, no mods needed. I would say anyone that plays the game is already opt-ed in; if they don't like it, complain to Mojang.

I don't really mind it, but how would knowing this information be of any use?

The main point behind this idea is to build up a users history of servers.
One point is then freinds can find what server your on then come and play with you.

The main thing is that its gonna be another unique feature of my server lists.

The opt out system only takes 1 min which is the login. Otherwise pressing a button don't take long at all.

I haven't encountered any situation in which I would not want to be tracked, so I say go for it.

This feature could be used by griefers/trolls to easily track their targets across multiple servers, allowing them to harass certain people.

Fair point, Sci. The thing is, since this facility is already provided by MC user lists, griefers and harrassers can already create a similar tool on their own. Perhaps an appropriate compromise would be to allow users to opt-out if they wish.

Unfortunately unless the server uses RCON (http://wiki.vg/Rcon)/Query (http://wiki.vg/Query), it's nearly impossible to track users easily. The 0xFE packet (http://wiki.vg/Protocol#Server_List_Ping_.280xFE.29) that the server sends to clients' server lists only generates a player count, not a list of players. Although, nothing is stopping going further and getting the 0xC9 packet (http://wiki.vg/Protocol#Player_List_Item_.280xC9.29) from a server, it just takes a lot more work since you have to login to the server first which involves getting a token from minecraft.net which also means passing a username/password verification.

I'm just not sure which one is harder to do in terms of quick implementations. If ryanteck is interested, I can hand over my PHP document that shows player count and server description, but it's not much of use to him I'm sure.

I already do use an packet that allows me to grab an list of users via the built in query system. I might soon implement the system which would get the number online as an last resort up time check. Although i'm not sure.

How would we exactly be tracked? Stalked? Cookies?

Using the servers tracked on mc-serverlist.co.uk I log what usernames I receive by the query packet / minequery and then add these to the database.

Thats it.

I'm not an expert on law, but have you checked that monitoring where people go and do on the internet is legal? Don't want you to get in any trouble xD

It is illegal unless it's solicited by his server list somewhere, like perhaps his privacy policy. However, it would also need to be noted on each of the servers that use his server list, otherwise players can still make an argument about it because they "didn't know that server was using his list so they didn't know they would be tracked".

I'm also not an expert on law, but that would make the most legal sense to me...

There are plenty of companies that track your every movement online. It is not illegal. How do you think targeted advertising works?

Now, displaying those results, I have no clue about the legality of that, but I doubt the government cares about your privacy enough to enact a law that hurts its precious corporate sponsors.

I don't think it would be illegal in the US, not sure about other countries.

Well the website would fall mainly under British (And EU I guess?) And possibly american laws.

I got told about MCBans which track and records a different set of data.

They record people with a ban level allowing bans from other servers to go across other servers.

They do have an interesting privacy policy which i might need to make my own version off,
Theres is at http://mcbans.com/privacy

Look at Google. Many sites use their statistic/ad tracking, so even if you never visit a Goggle site you are still tracked by them. They get away with it

Ahh, but are these tracking results available to the public?

Nope, but they use them tons to help third partys and themselfs out. A demo can be seen at http://mc-serverlist.co.uk/searchuser.php?username=ryanteck

You play another server way more than innectis? :O
TRAITOR. That is all.

Depending I have been playing it just because its an industrial craft server then yeh I have.
At the moment innectis can get boring from time to time. And another main developer of the site owns the server so I can code and chat to him.

Problem?

Well the system seems liked across multiple servers.

Any more thoughts before i lock this topic?

I still dislike it. It's like having a public billboard displaying all the shops you've been to. What if one of those shops happens to be a whorehouse?
Title: Re: Would you like to be tracked? (Semi Offical Announcement)
Post by: ryanteck on February 14, 2012, 07:42:34 PM
Well its shown!

But we don't allow whorehouse servers. Sorry to break your dreams...

You will be able to opt out soon

Btw I think your opt-out should hide all server's you've been to from the public - don't allow them to hide specific servers (so all or nothing). Perhaps data collection could still occur but not be shown to public?
Title: Re: Would you like to be tracked? (Semi Offical Announcement)
Post by: ryanteck on February 15, 2012, 10:47:18 AM
Data collection will always happen, it would be more work to make it not collect.

We will just make it show nothing if opted out

Nope no cookies. We just log the minequery data. Tbh what stops someone going round hunting for people?

I guess tracking username would be fine...  they're largely anonymous anyway...  as long as you don't include my name, address, phone number, and a list of all my fears I'm not too worried about it...  XD

This is an interesting idea. i don't really have a side on it but there are both + and - to this. :o
Be cool to see what happens if it isn't vetoed (I hoped I spelled that right).
Just my thoughts,
