Do not update to the latest minecraft version if a notification asks you to update. We still need to release an IDP for Minecraft 1.5.2. Until then, we're stuck with 1.5.1.
If you did update
MAKE SURE MINECRAFT IS CLOSED BEFORE DOING THIS!
There is a simple fix. Simply follow the directions below:
1) Download the Minecraft 1.5.1 .jar file here: http://www.codespeak.org/Minecraft/1.5.1/minecraft.jar (http://www.codespeak.org/Minecraft/1.5.1/minecraft.jar)
2) Extract the contents to the desktop.
3) Open up Start -> run (XP), or just open up the start menu (Vista/7) and type in %APPDATA%\.minecraft and hit enter.
4) Copy the bin folder you extracted to the desktop, and paste it in the .minecraft folder, clicking yes when asked to override.
5) There you go!

Updated to contain Minecraft 1.4.7's .jar file.

I thought we were going to have a temporary vanilla server for 1.5? :(

Of course, but until Hret does it, players can temporarily play on 1.4.7! :D

So we are going on vanilla till IDP is updated for 1.5.

I urge everyone to download the new launcher from Mojang. The current launcher will not be compatible with Minecraft 1.6 and up, due to the way the game will work past 1.5.2. This is because Mojang has been working on the mod API and is phasing out the old launcher.
This will mean that these topics will no longer be necessary as the new launcher allows you to go back to previous installations that you can select from a menu. I have provided the links below for all three major platforms.
