There has been a lot of lag lately, and it seems to come at a certain time, every time; shortly before a restart.
I am not positive about this, but it seems to me the server starts to get massive lag once there is 30-60 mins to a restart, so could the simple solution be to change the server to restart the server every 4 hours instead of 5? I don't know, but I'd like this fixed ASAP.

Restarting the server more often won't fix lag issues.

We need to find the source of the issue and fix that ^^

from what i can tell, i think its maybe too many people on at once talking on the chat? (assumption)
or
maybe its your internet connection. I went from wifi to ethernet and now the server runs flawless.
on a side note,
if your on a mac, i dont blame the server for lag (sarcasm)

A change was made in Minecraft 1.3.1 that gets rid of "chat lag" which is accompanied by when a server is lagging, and no one can chat. There is most likely code we have that is keeping things in memory that it shouldn't. We'll figure it out sometime.

Then please explain why the lag is suddenly gone after a restart?

When the server restarts, everything that is stored in memory is reset, this works as a temporary fix, but the idea would be to find the cause..

A recent optimization was made that would hopefully stop the lag in the coming update. We'll see though.

Is it possible that after every restart the server is updated?

That's just silly, as every update does not address significant issues. We usually wait until there's a significant amount of changes, or the changes themselves are significant.

We can't, updates sometimes change stuff around which we use.
If we did auto update they would break and we would end up having to reset back to a backup a lot of the times

Okay :(
