Title: Forum Filter?
Post by: alexshield10 on January 12, 2013, 06:18:19 PM
Before you criticise me look at these:

http://archives.codespeak.org/innectis/forum/index.php/topic,1436.0.html (http://archives.codespeak.org/innectis/forum/index.php/topic,1436.0.html)
^^^ These are just some of the instances were people have swore if u look up some bad words in the search bar, You would find a lot more,
The reason i brought this up is because they're could be some young kids on the forums.

You realize these posts are over a year old. When people swear on the forums, as staff, we usually go back and edit the swear word out, or issue a warning.

Mhm but it would be easier to have a filter.

Well, in order to add a forum filter, we either need to find an SMF one, or make one, so do you have any that already exist in mind?

Why? Does it really offend you down to the core? Are swear words really that crippling to your eyes? Are you afraid of words you probably hear everyday at school, at work, and in general?

Would you enjoy getting in trouble by your parents for being on a site with curse words written? Think of the younger players.

I would think that egg means that the younger players wouldn't be able to access this forum, or the server if a parent disproved of what he/she saw.

That's just overprotective parenting. I vote no for a filter.

Everyone swears, everyone's seen it at one point in their life. Minimum swearing on a forum with only 3 topics of proof doesn't need a filter.

So I vote no.

There really isn't a need for one though. Staff does a decent job of warning people who over do it.

We moderator the forums highly enough, I don't think the filter is require here.

As for filtering content in general, Innectis is aimed at a wide target audience, in order to do this, certain issues such as indecent content and swearing need to be dealt with. Although the internet is full of these sorts of things, we need to do as much as we can to encourage a friendly enviroment. There are a large amount of very protective parents who do not want their children exposed to this sort of thing, for this reason we restrict it. There are a fair few places on the internet that restrict things such as we do, so we are not the only ones ^^

Pretty harsh there, Skye. You need to keep those thoughts to yourself and speak in terms of young children. Perhaps you weren't raised the way most kids were?

I hate swearing, but I put up with it. I'd rather block it out completely, ESPECIALLY when young children are present. That language is not good at all... it's used in more negative contexts than good ones. Don't attempt to make us more like you in this regard...

I do think that one is needed, this should be a website where a younger child can join and not possibly receive punishment

Sorry Alpha, I'm going to have to disagree with you here. Kids these days are going to exposed to language eventually, and no one can prevent them from learning those words.  Personally, I love swearing, it's funny and a great way to relieve stress. Also, your point of " Don't attempt to make us more like you in this regard..." - are you not doing the same exact thing by enforcing a strict profanity filter?

Is pornography going to be a norm in the future then? Because kids get exposed to that, are we just going to say that's going to be inevitable too? The goal is to stop it while we can...

What a cruel world.

I agree with alpha! Swearing is stupid and personally people who swear all the time in every second sentence i think are stupid and silly! Kids should be exposed to stuff! I know a seven year old who says the f word. His parents crack down on it but he is now saying more and more swear word as he gets older. Now i don't think that is what we want in society today. A forum filter is good in my opinion and kids are seeing and hearing stuff to inappropriate these days even i am hearing stuff which i shouldn't be! So we need to be a more caring and user friendly community and not swear as much. But, also learn to control are anger by not having rants and swearing, not griefing! we should be enforcing this more than we already are!

Pornography is pretty normal nowadays though, it's probably one of the biggest industries on the planet. Also, it's already pretty inevitable that a child will find out about pornography one way or another, if you try to hide something a child will become curious and ask about it. I think it's better to educate them on the subject instead of hiding it, maybe when they're at an appropriate age though.

Unless you have no access to a computer for your entire life, then yes, it's inevitable. Evryone's going to find out about it one way or another. Same as swearing. I think it's better to teach them it's wrong than to try and hide it.

an idea that just occured to me was to have three main seperate chat channels. If the issue on profanity is so diversely objective, then why not?

1. All - The standard chat. Moderate swearing allowed, nothing serious.
2. Mature - All types of swearing and profanity allowed. If a player repeatedly uses it to insult / harass another player, however, then they will be punished.
3. Youth - No swearing, clean chat. Swearing is a reportable offense in this chat.

It would be pointless! I agree with nos because how do you know who is joining which channel! So really it is pointless. Alot of servers that go well have swearing filters because parents allow them and think it is a safe place for them to play and appropriate. Even with separate chat channels how do you control who is on which channel! So Merc swearing isn't the best, i get offended when people swear rudely at me. I believe so do many! We should have a filter to make are community a safer more child friendly place which would result in a bigger community growth and that is what i think is best for the server!

According to Forbes only about 4% of the Internet is Porn.
4% might sound small if you're just looking at it as 4%, but there are MANY other things on the internet. Sadly Forbes didn't give us a Pie Chart to show what else it's being compared to, But I'm sure out of all of the things on the internet, only a couple of other things might be higher than 4% if you consider how many different categories there could be with the diversity of the Internet.

Parents will often take a short look at what their children are doing, if they find it affects their behaviour or language, then they will most likely take action. Please be aware that young people are more easily affected by the use of foul language.
