Title: Hurricane Sandy
Post by: Hretsam on October 30, 2012, 02:57:02 AM
Hi everyone,

As you all might have heard, there is a hurricane on route to the east coast.
Normally this isn't that much of a problem, but I just received word that our datacenter has already been (slightly) hit by it.

It seems the generators that are keeping our centre running have enough fuel for a couple of days, so hopefully the server stays online.
Anyway, it is possible that in a while our systems will go down, and we will be no longer able to get them back online.

Would this happen, try to keep an eye out on our twitter account (https://twitter.com/Innectis).
Where I will post all information I have would our servers go down.

Thank you,

Hretsam

Actually, it's not as bad as originally thought, the hurricane made a bit of a bend downward towards NY, so that's a thing.

Hret, would these forums go down too? I can host them temporarily if that's the case.

It appears that the NFO datacenter has been taken offline due to Hurricane Sandy. I'll put my test server up for you guys. home.codespeak.org is the IP.

We will look to alternative methods to keep the server going during this outage. However, for now, my server will serve as an alternative.

No the forums are located at a different datacenter to ensure that one of servers is online (as both server going down is highly unlikely).

Anyway, to give a status update.

Power has run out at the datacenter, we wont be able to get it back online until they restore it.
They are most likely working on getting it fixed, for now it seems we have to wait.

We had a pretty bad storm yesterday in Pennsylvania. I lost power for about 20 mins, that was the worst part of it (where I live). Other than that I think it has passed.

Power seems to have been restored to the generators, which means Innectis is back for now. The server is still on 1.3.2 for now. If you can't connect, upgrade to 1.4.2 and come on home.codespeak.org.

In theory, yes.
But it costs more money to maintain 2 locations (not to mention one of which wont be used much) unless you modify Bukkit/MC extensively.

Even so, the probability that the server would be down for as long as it is now (has been around 24 hours now), is low.
Keep in mind there is only so much they can do to prepare for stuff like this, and as our host noticed they weren't sufficient. Its likely they will change something to prevent it in the future.

I live in the UK too :) and I got to say that if you want a datacenter which will not be of risk of a Earthquake or Hurricane/Tornado them you should damn have one here. Also a fair percentage of the Innectis community live in the UK
