Is this server change likely to be noticeable to us? e.g. a speed increase/decrease, maybe even (hopefully) less lag when lots of people are online?

I'm afraid not really so. The lag probably comes from the IDP but there may be other factors involved too.

Damn, so apart from cleaning up the code a little there is nothing that can be done to improve it :/
Are you using a different host? Hopefully I could get a better connection to the server than the 1 bar I have always had!

The amount of bars that showed up when you held TAB was irrelevant. It had no purpose. It didn't actually reflect what your connection to the server was actually like, if that's what you're talking about.

I mean't both that and also in the minecraft launcher I only ever got 1 bar
